Ice Cave Tour & Diamond Beach

Image
A few days later we were able to thankfully do our glacier and ice cave tour. Although this was a different tour than we signed up for, we were just grateful that we got to even do a tour at all. The tour ended up being one of our favorite things we did on the trip. We did a short hike to the glacier and then we basically just had free time to look around and go inside the ice caves and glacier. The glacier we went to is the largest ice cap in Europe and is called Vatnajokull. The average thickness of the ice is 1,250 feet and the maximum thickness is 3,120 feet. There are also several volcanoes located underneath the glacier, with the last known eruption in 2011. Seeing a glacier up close was one of the coolest things I've ever done. Check out the pictures below from our ice cave and glacier tour. View of the glacier from a distance Underneath the glacier!  That is a wall of ice! So cool!  Sliding down the glacier was SO fun!! We had to drive about 5 hours to get to the area ...

Iceland - Golden Circle & Northern Lights -

Have these blog posts made you want to visit Iceland yet? I hope so! It is an amazing country that has so many beautiful things to see. This post is all about our third full day in Iceland when we traveled from the Snaefellsnes peninsula to the "Golden Circle." Faxafoss We started in Thingvellir National Park where there is a ton to see and because of this, there were tons of people there. This park is where Iceland's first parliament met in 930 AD. It is also home to the boundaries of two tectonic plates, the Eurasion and North American plates. (My inner geology nerd thought this was so cool to walk between two tectonic plates) You can even scuba dive between the two plates! While in the park, we walked to a waterfall called Oxarfoss. This was a really cool historical park but it wasn't necessarily my favorite spot of the trip. Oxarfoss Walking between the two tectonic plates Our next spot was a perfect treat considering the weather... Ice cream...

Iceland - Snaefellsnes Peninsula -

This western Iceland peninsula was easily one of my favorite days of our whole trip. We drove from Reykjavik (the capital) around 8am and then drove the perimeter of the peninsula. We ended the day at our AirBnB around 5pm with lots of stops along the way. There is SO much to see in this part of Iceland. Here is our jam packed day in the Snaefellsness Peninsula :) The route we took for our second full day in Iceland! Our first stop was  Ytri Tunga Seal Beach . This was a beautiful beach but unfortunately we did not see any seals. They are more commonly here during the summer months. Our second stop was  Búðakirkja Black Church which is a stunning, small church that was originally built in 1703. When we arrived there was a wedding in progress, which was really cool to see. Our third stop of the day was  Arnarstapi which is a quaint town with several lookout points along the coastline. One of those viewpoints is Gatklettur, which is a naturally f...
