Ice Cave Tour & Diamond Beach

A few days later we were able to thankfully do our glacier and ice cave tour. Although this was a different tour than we signed up for, we were just grateful that we got to even do a tour at all. The tour ended up being one of our favorite things we did on the trip. We did a short hike to the glacier and then we basically just had free time to look around and go inside the ice caves and glacier.

The glacier we went to is the largest ice cap in Europe and is called Vatnajokull. The average thickness of the ice is 1,250 feet and the maximum thickness is 3,120 feet. There are also several volcanoes located underneath the glacier, with the last known eruption in 2011. Seeing a glacier up close was one of the coolest things I've ever done. Check out the pictures below from our ice cave and glacier tour.

Underneath the glacier!

That is a wall of ice! So cool!

Sliding down the glacier was SO fun!!

We had to drive about 5 hours to get to the area of our hike but close to the meeting point was Diamond Beach. Diamond beach is so incredible. This was Drew's favorite spot of the trip! They call it diamond beach because chunks from the nearby iceberg lagoon have broken off and have washed up on shore. The pieces of ice are all different sizes and are just stunning. Check out the pictures below.

Okay, I think I've finally covered our entire Iceland trip. When I go back and look at all of the pictures it makes me want to go back. Iceland is one of my favorite places I've ever visited. I think if we get to go back I'd like to go in the summer when there is almost 24 hours of daylight and we could camp. I hope you've enjoyed all of these Iceland posts :)

Oh, just an FYI: if you click on "Destinations" at the top of the homepage you can click on any country or city that you'd like to read more about on the blog. Enjoy :)
