Italy Adventure - Part 3 - Rome

The last part of this Italian adventure was Rome! This was my third time to Rome and Drew's first. I was excited to dig deeper into the history of the city and appreciate the food that Rome has to offer. We arrived on Sunday and we had a few hours until our Colosseum and Roman Forum tour so we walked around and saw some of the sights. Let me just say this... The amount of tourists and people trying to sell you things was really overwhelming, especially right next to the major sights. It was quite unnerving and really spoils the historic sights. Anyway, we saw the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum and then grabbed a bite to eat before our tour.

We definitely recommend buying your tour tickets ahead of time for the Colosseum and Roman Forum. This way you get to skip the line and get information about the sights that you otherwise might not know. Drew and I love doing tours... Can you tell yet? :) The Colosseum was built around AD 72 (that's really old!) and could hold around 50,000 people. It was used for many different things during the medieval times such as; executions, mock battles, gladiator contests, and dramas. The Colosseum has been substantially damaged over time due to earthquakes, thieves, and stone robbers. In 2018, the Colosseum was the most popular tourist attraction in the world!

The Roman Forum tour was a continuation of the Colosseum tour. The Roman Forum is a plaza surrounded by the ruins of government buildings. For centuries, this area was the hub of the city where they held public speeches, trials, and meetings.

After our tour, we watched the sunset and headed to dinner. There is just something about an Italian sunset!! Rome is famous for "spaghetti carbonara" so we had that and pizza for dinner.

The next day we had our Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica tour. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgable and we learned a lot about Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel and all of the different popes that have lived in Vatican City. My favorite part about visiting the Vatican was seeing the Sistine Chapel. The Sistine Chapel is really a remarkable work of art. The ceiling of the chapel was painted over 500 years ago by Michelangelo.

After spending the morning in Vatican City, which is the world's smallest country, we then headed to grab pizza and gelato for lunch!

Pesto Pizza (my fave!) and basil/mozzarella pizza!
I mean, how much yummier could it get?
Our last day in Rome was spent waking up early to go see some sights without so many tourists! We went to see the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. We were so happy we got to see these sights without the crowds. (See below the difference between the photos of the Trevi Fountain)

Spanish Steps!
The very last thing we did in Rome was have gelato from my favorite gelato spot in Rome: Frigidarium! It was the perfect end to an amazing trip!!

We then took a flight from Rome back to Munich so we could be reunited with our pup, Tex! A few weeks later we got to meet my sister and her boyfriend in Switzerland! I hope everyone has a great week.

    1. Hi Rebecca! Thanks for your question. The pizza in Rome (and all of Italy) is similar to the pizza in the United States. I would say that what makes the pizza in Italy better is the ingredients are much more fresh than in the US. The crust is also a little thinner. Great question!
