Southern Germany Hiking Trip

Wow, it has been a whirlwind summer! Drew and I have been very busy traveling and exploring around Europe. At the beginning of summer, we did a road trip around southern Germany. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and it was really fun to be around the mountains and all the greenery. The best part was that we were able to bring along Tex. Tex has really become quite the expert swimmer and hiker since moving out to Germany :)

Overlooking Konigsee

Our first stop was to Berchtesgaden which is a small town in the Bavarian Alps that borders Austria. As soon as we arrived we took the Obersalzberg Cable Car to the top of one of the mountains so we could see a view of the town.

After that we went to Wimbachklamm Gorge, which was probably my favorite thing of the trip. The water was crystal clear and walking through the gorge was so peaceful. There were several waterfalls that cascaded into the river, which made for a beautiful sound. We also practically had the place to ourselves.

The next day, we did a hike around Kongisee, a stunning lake surrounded by mountains. We started by hiking to a viewpoint of the lake called Rabenwand lookout. The views were seriously beautiful. After that, we decided to hike further to a "secret" waterfall called Königsbach. This hike was a little strenuous and we were going over and under huge fallen trees and roots. Tex did a great job despite the challenge. The views and the waterfall were definitely worth the hike!

After the hike, we ate at the restaurant at the base of the mountain and I had the most delicious Käsespätzle ever! After that, we drove to check out lake Hintersee that was close to our hotel and to let Tex swim. The lake was beautiful and of course Tex had a great time :)

The view from our hotel!

The next morning we headed towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which was about a two hour drive. Garmisch is a beautiful town great for skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer. The first thing we did when we arrived was went to the Zugspitze, the tallest mountain in Germany (2,962 m above sea level). We took a big cable car to the top which boasted beautiful views of the nearby lake and the snow capped mountains. Once at the peak, you could have a snack or hot beverage, check out the views, and shop in the gift shop. Tex even got to play in the snow :)

Our final day of the trip we went to the Partnachklamm Gorge, a very impressive gorge with beautiful water running through it. Tex got to splash around in the water and then we decided to head back to the car. Well, we took the entirely wrong path and ended up hiking up the entire gorge. It was a really steep hike but we made it! Needless to say, we were totally exhausted!

Both of these towns were so much fun and we hope to visit again one day soon! I know Drew is eager to go in the winter so we can go skiing. Looking back through all of these pictures has me ready to plan our next hiking trip... I wonder where we will go?
